NRL 2023: Corey Oates suffers broken jaw after Scott Drinkwater tackle in Broncos vs. Cowboys
Broncos star Corey Oates is set for a lengthy stint on the sidelines, after suffering a suspected broken jaw, with Cowboy Scott Drinkwater sin-binned for contact to the head.
Broncos winger Corey Oates has suffered a suspected broken jaw in a wild and willing Queensland derby against the Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium.
Oates left the field in the 44th minute clutching at his face after colliding heavily with Cowboys fullback Scott Drinkwater as he attempted to break a 10-all deadlock before 43,162 fans at Suncorp.
The Queensland Origin star looked certain to score before Drinkwater flew across and appeared to produce a shoulder charge on Oates, who hit the deck and was ultimately held up over the tryline by the Cowboys cover.
Referee Ashley Klein put Drinkwater on report and sent him to the sin bin as Oates was assisted from the field by Broncos medicos.
The incident was the flashpoint of a typically ferocious XXXX derby with the Broncos overcoming an 8-0 deficit to take a 20-10 lead after 55 minutes off the back of an electric debut by Brisbane fullback sensation Reece Walsh.
