1923 Filming Locations: Where Was It Filmed?

The American Western genre television series 1923 acts as the prequel and sequel to the series Yellowstone and 1883, respectively. 1923 released its first season on December 18, 2022, and concluded on February 26, 2023, promising the renewal of its second reason. Like Yellowstone and 1883, 1923 is also a Paramount+ network series.

1923 consisted of 8 episodes in its first season, releasing four episodes at a time, with a break of a month, before the release of the next set of four. Taylor Sheridan serves as the writer and executive producer of the series. The series is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, the ones which also produced the sister series Yellowstone and 1883.

The story of 1923 is set in the year 1923, Montana, which is marked by a period of adversity that included prohibition, drought, and the beginning of the Great Depression. All these affected the city of Montana deeply. Therefore, the narrative focuses on the family generation of the Dutton Family and how they survive through all the adversities.

The series has a stellar set of lead actors, which includes Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton, Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton, Brandon Sklenar as Spencer Dutton, and Julia Schlaepfer as Alexandra. Several other actors perform in the series as well, who all play significant roles after that of the protagonists.

The series, 1923, reportedly is the biggest debut of Paramount+ in its history. 1923 Filming Locations

The shooting of 1923 started in August 2022 and concluded in a few months’ time. The series is shot dominantly in Montana, around Butte, Anaconda, Whitehall, Deer Lodge, Hamilton, Dillon, and several other areas. Tanzania, South Africa, and Malta also contribute to the list of filming locations of 1923.

Several scenes of 1923 were shot in the area around Uptown Butte, making it one of the primary locations. The production team of the series used the Butte Civic Center, located at 1340 Harrison Avenue, Butte, MT, to set several sets for filming the interior sequences of the series.

They constructed the election headquarters in the Silver House, situated at 106 West Broadway Street, Butte, MT, and constructed an Auto Dealer Shop out of the Piccadilly Museum of Transportation, located at 20 West Broadway Street, Butte, MT.

The Hotel Bozeman, which is shown in the series, is constructed out of the Kenwood building at 63 West Broadway Street, Butte, MT. The production team of 1923 also re-designed various stores and shops with notices, giving them the look of the 1920s.

A number of exterior sequences of the series were shot in the Butte-Silver Bow Courthouse area situated at 155 West Granite Street, Butte, MT; 65 East Broadway & Wyoming Street, Butte, MT; Butte Sheriff’s Department located at 225 North Alaska Street, Butte, MT. Some of the other areas include Hamilton Street, Montana Street, and Quartz Street.

The boxing ring, where some of the most important sequences of the series take place, was shot at a designed boxing ring located at the corner of Broadway and Curtis Streets. Several interior scenes of the series were also shot in the Carpenter’s Union Hall, located at 156 West Granite Street, Butte, MT. They especially used the second floor of the building, which serves as the KMBF Radio Station.

Cape Town, South Africa

Some of the significant scenes of the series were shot in Kalk Bay, which is a fishing village on the False Bay coast. The harbor of Kalk Bay was utilized to re-design the traditional boats. Some of the scenes were also shot in the sports field of Fish Hoek High School at 8 Recreation Rd, Fish Hoek Cape Town.
